Overview

AI is a core pillar for the group. As strategic partners, we set out a shared goal: to unlock AI’s potential, enabling MONY Group’s engineers to build better, faster, and more reliable digital products. By empowering engineers to work smarter, the group can deliver improved tools and services that help households save money. To support this vision, we collaborated with MONY Group early in their AI adoption, starting with a targeted GitHub Copilot training day for their development and technology team.

Opportunity

MONY Group already had a foundational layer of AI in use across the organisation. Employees were embracing tools like Microsoft Copilot and GitHub Copilot. The team had also integrated AWS Bedrock into the company’s application stacks to support the development of generative AI workloads.

With numerous providers launching their own specialised offerings, leadership wanted to make informed, strategic choices in an increasingly dynamic AI landscape. In GitHub Copilot, we identified a coherent solution that would provide engineers with a single, reliable assistant, avoiding fragmentation across overlapping tools. We moved beyond the simple tasks it is often associated with – such as generating boilerplate code – to tackle more complex and valuable engineering work.

Solution

The bespoke workshop focused on practical ways to use GitHub Copilot, helping engineers boost efficiency and elevate their coding practices. During the session, which was held in person, we shared practical learnings from our own internal AI enablement journey and training programme.

We tackled speed and efficiency. The hands-on training went far beyond basic code generation, covering advanced and practical use cases. For example, we looked at how to refactor legacy codebases and apply new design patterns. Together, we improved the quality and speed of testing, using GitHub Copilot as a partner for methodologies such as Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD).

The ultimate goal was to make the developer experience smoother, faster, and more satisfying. The training leveraged shortcuts to maximise the benefits of having GitHub's tool embedded in the Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

Outcome

The workshop delivered immediate and tangible results. By focusing singularly on GitHub Copilot, engineers saw firsthand the value of having one clear, helpful assistant rather than a patchwork of disconnected tools. This sharpened their efficiency and eliminated tedious tasks, enabling them to focus on more creative and satisfying work.

More importantly, it broadened perspectives – evolving AI’s role from a simple utility to a collaborative partner. MONY Group’s engineers now use GitHub Copilot to validate ideas in real time and find better solutions faster, extending its application to non-coding tasks, such as summarising meetings.

Ultimately, this session demystified AI. It gave developers the freedom to experiment and prove its value for themselves, directly answering leadership’s ambition for a clear, practical path forward. As a result, MONY Group are now empowered to integrate AI into their daily toolkit.
